Artwork by Stephen Rea

My name is Stephen Rea, I have been an artist for thirty years, my first works were mainly reproductions of Old Masters.

I developed a fascination for light and dark whilst living in Anglesey. Watching the sunrise along the Menai Straits, I studied the change of tone and colour of the suns rays pushing through the morning mist.

After watching an eclipse, I discovered the term Penumbra; the everlasting battle between light and dark. Inspiration to develop various techniques:

Four colour - Oil on canvas. Areas of shadow producing hidden images within the main subject. (whisper, faces)

Reverse Painting - Acrylic on Gesso.  Vibrant colours with soft edges. (heat)

Tactile - Breaking from the confines of visual art, so that visually impaired people can touch and read the image. (majestic, innocent)

My recent work, Reflections of Penumbra, looks at images from a different perspective.  Light bringing shadows to life.  Movement created by winds and undercurrents on water, transforming the image, shattering it into a myriad of tones and colours.  Looking skyward through the tree branches, the light jumping from limb to limb, these pieces are produced on large canvases to give a greater visual impact

I hope you enjoy your journey through my world of colour, tone, shadow and light
